Five Promotions & Six Debuts: Seren Dwr Slalom Success

Every Division 1 paddler was once a nervous beginner standing on a start line for the very first time.

Over the past month, Seren Dŵr has celebrated both ends of that journey.

Between 23 May and 14 June, our paddlers travelled across Scotland, Wales and England for four consecutive weekends of racing at Fairnilee, Bala Mill, Symonds Yat and Llandysul. Along the way, five athletes earned promotion, six paddlers made their slalom racing debuts, and countless personal milestones were achieved.

From first starts to Division 1 slalom success, it has been a memorable few weeks for Team Seren Dŵr.

Five Athletes, Five Different Journeys

The headline achievement from this period was undoubtedly the promotion of five Seren Dŵr athletes. What makes that even more special is that each paddler reached their goal in a different way.

🏆 Ioan Sutherland – Division 2 K1M

Ioan's promotion is the result of months of consistent effort.

Strong performances throughout the spring, including race wins and podium finishes, saw him steadily climb the rankings before earning promotion at Symonds Yat. His progress over the past year has been fantastic to watch and is a great example of what can be achieved through determination and perseverance.

🏆 Louis Cousins – Division 1 K1M

Louis has enjoyed an outstanding season.

Podium finishes at Fairnilee, strong performances at Bala Mill and victories in both Division 2 K1M races at Symonds Yat helped propel him into Division 1.

His promotion is thoroughly deserved and reflects the consistency, versatility and commitment he has shown throughout the season.

🏆 Harrison Morton – Division 1 C1M

Harrison earned promotion through a series of superb race performances. Achieving a promotion earlier in the year in K1M at Holme Pierrepont he has kept the momentum up to succeed in C1M.

Victories on both days at Fairnilee put him firmly on course for Division 1 before a first and second place finish at Symonds Yat secured promotion by wins. His achievement is a reward for the focus and hard work he has shown all season and marks an exciting next step in his paddling journey.

🏆 Rowan Cysewski Light – Division 1 K1M and C1M

Rowan's promotion caps an excellent period of development.

Victory at Bala Mill was one of several standout performances that helped secure his move into Division 1. At the same time, Rowan has also been establishing himself near the top of Division 2 C1M, demonstrating impressive versatility across both disciplines.

His promotion at Llandysul in C1M is the latest chapter in a journey built on commitment and steady progression.

🏆 Emily Darlington – Division 2 K1W

Emily secured her promotion in style.

Winning three of her four Division 3 races this season, she achieved promotion by wins at Llandysul. It's a fantastic achievement and a reflection of the determination she has shown throughout the year.

We can't wait to see what comes next.

Fairnilee: A Strong Start

The month began at Fairnilee in the Scottish Borders, host of this year's Pan Celtic Cup.

With higher-than-normal water levels creating a challenging course, Seren Dŵr paddlers rose to the occasion and delivered some excellent results.

Harrison claimed victory in Division 2 C1M on both days, while Louis finished second in Division 2 K1M on both days and also took victory in Division 3 C1M. Izabella Starka added two podium finishes in Division 2 C1W, finishing third on Saturday and second on Sunday.

More importantly, the weekend gave the squad confidence and momentum heading into a busy few weeks of racing.

Bala Mill: Momentum Builds

The following weekend saw the team head to Bala Mill on the River Tryweryn.

Rowan's victory in Division 2 K1M was one of the highlights of the weekend and promotion. Ioan continued his climb up the rankings with another set of strong performances, while several other Seren Dŵr paddlers added valuable experience and points.

By the end of the weekend, more promotion opportunities were beginning to look very real.

Symonds Yat: A Weekend to Remember

Symonds Yat proved to be a landmark event for the club.

Three athletes achieved promotion over the weekend, with Ioan moving into Division 2 K1M and both Louis and Harrison earning their places in Division 1.

Moments like these are what athletes work towards through countless training sessions, long journeys and weekends spent racing. Seeing three paddlers reach their goals at the same event was a proud moment for everyone involved.

Llandysul: Home Waters, New Beginnings

The final event of this remarkable period took place on home waters in Llandysul.

Across the weekend, Seren Dŵr athletes completed an incredible 59 race entries, highlighting the enthusiasm and depth that exists throughout the club.

The event also delivered two more promotions, with Rowan moving into Division 1 K1M and Emily earning promotion to Division 2 K1W.

Just as importantly, six paddlers made their slalom racing debuts.

Making their first appearances in Division 3 were:

• Sylvie McDonald

Making their first appearances in Division 4 were:

• Gwen McDonald

• Lewis Morris

• Finley Blofeld

Taking to the start line for the first time takes courage. There are nerves, excitement and plenty of unknowns. Every experienced paddler remembers that feeling.

These six athletes took that first step and should be incredibly proud of themselves. Today's debutants are tomorrow's promotion stories.

The weekend also hosted the Welsh U14 Championships, where several Seren Dŵr athletes produced excellent performances. We'll be celebrating those achievements in a separate round-up.

Slalom Success is More Than Results

While promotions and podiums are always worth celebrating, what makes this period particularly special is the breadth of success across the club.

Some paddlers were taking their first steps into competitive slalom. Others were earning promotion into higher divisions. A few were reaching Division 1.

Different achievements, but all part of the same journey.

That is what a thriving club looks like.

None of it would be possible without the support of coaches, volunteers, parents and families who give up countless hours to help athletes pursue their goals.

To every parent carrying boats, driving hundreds of miles, standing in the rain, cheering from the bank and making these weekends possible, thank you.

Looking Ahead

Over just three weeks, Seren Dŵr celebrated six promotions, six racing debuts and countless personal successes.

Some athletes took their first steps into racing. Others reached Division 1. Every one of those achievements deserves to be celebrated.

If the past month has shown anything, it's that the future of Seren Dŵr is not only bright, it's already taking shape.
